Movie Review: Battleship

***THIS REVIEW IS SPOILER FREE!!!!!***

My GOD I loved this movie.

I want so much to be unbiased about it but that’s something very hard for me to do considering the content. I come from a Navy family. My cousin was a navigator on an F-14 Tomcat for 8 years (for those that don’t know jets, that’s the plane they fly in Top Gun). My husband was in the Navy when we met, a weapons control specialist serving on board an Atlantic fleet destroyer. My sister was a tech serving on board the USS Ronald Reagan when part of this movie was filmed on her ship. I love the Navy. And this movie was ALL NAVY.

The film, directed by Friday Night Lights creator Peter Berg, also featured the stunning (and very funny) Taylor Kitsch (my favorite Tim Riggins, also from Friday Night Lights) as a charming but troubled Navy lieutenant and his much more responsible brother played by Alexander Skarsgård of True Blood fame. So, if big boats with lots of guns aren’t your thing, these gorgeous guys might be.

In all honesty, the movie was so much more than I ever thought it could be. Big names aside, it also featured real US Army and Navy veterans and paid real homage to not only our brave men and women serving, but those of our allies as well. There were so many beautiful moments that gave tribute to the United States Navy, past and present. Moments that showed the real power and fight that these great people put into their work every single day on our behalf.

Also, there were explosions. GREAT ones. The action sequences and gun play were some of the best I’ve seen on film and some that my husband, as a Navy veteran, will talk about for years to come. It was intense and fun and constantly surprising. Jesse Plemons (another Friday Night Lights alum) and Brooklyn Decker provided a very entertaining supporting cast. I had initially worried about Rihanna as an actress and was concerned that she’d muck the entire thing but she proved to be a delightful addition to a really fun movie.

Other highlights: Fighter jets, an almost entirely classic and 90’s rock soundtrack including AC/DC and Stone Temple Pilots, Taylor Kitsch in a towel, super scary aliens AND MORE. Did I mention the gorgeous Navy ships yet? LOVE.

If you are looking for a good time at the theater this summer, a reason to throw your hands in the air and shout out loud, PLEASE go see this movie. You won’t regret it.
